MAYOBRIDGE CLUB NOTES

Mayobridge camogs (pictured above) travelled to Kilcoo on Sunday to play in the County Feile. 16 teams playing in 4 groups to be followed by a semi-final and final which would see only one team progressing to National Feile. It was always going to be a hard task, but the girls seized the day and held Ballycran to a 0 1 to 01 draw in their first game. The girls knew they needed more scoresand went into  their second game against Liatroim even more determined. Mayobridge won 1-0 0-0. By their final group game, the girls knew that theyneeded a lot of scores to qualify from the group but they responded to the challenge and played superbly. Jessica Gribben had a goal disallowed early in the game, but this was followed by 3 more goals and several great points. Final score An Riocht 0 -0 Mayobridge 3 3. A one point difference in the group between the Bridge and Ballycran saw Ballycran progress to a semi-final meeting with Ballyholland.
Not to lose a game and only concede one point in three games would in most circumstances be a good day in any sport but not at County Camogie Feile. A disappointing day but the girls should be very proud of themselves, each one played to their best and worked hard showing great determination. The future is certainly bright. To paraphrase the basketball player and coach John Wooden “Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.” and the Mayobridge U14 camogs showed  that they had loads of courage.

After winning their first three league games Mayobridge senior football teamwere brought back down to earth on Friday evening when they lost to visitors Bryansford by a three point margin.2-6 to 1-6. The game was played in horrendous weather conditions including heavy rain and a gale force wind.  The wind seemed to slightly favour the Bridge in the first half and they took advantage to lead 0-5 to 0-1 at half-time.
In the early stages of the second half the home side had a of possession but had little to show for their efforts including missing a glorious goal opportunity in the 38th minute. Buoyed by this let-off the Ford began to take control of proceedings and in a two minute spell in the middle of the half rocked the Bridge with two goals. In the dying minutes of the game a high ball from Caolan Gallagher was forced to the net by Cory Quinn but this was too little too late and the Ford went home with the spoils.

Congratulations to the U-14 football team and management on winning Division Two in the Feile and thus qualifying for the All Ireland finals in Galway at the end of June.

Mayobridge minor team had a good win on Tuesday evening against visitors Carryduff. The Bridge started the game well and the full backline of Dane McNeill, Ollie Grant and Matthew Morgan were outstanding. Conor O’Keefe in nets played really well, his kickouts were excellent as they invariably found a Sky Blue jersey. Playing with the breeze the home side outscored the visitors in the first quarter of the game. This was the best spell of the game for the Bridgewhich included a goal from a penalty which was awarded after Paddy Donnanwas fouled.   Unfortunately Paddy was injured and couldn’t continue and it is to be hoped that he will make a speedy recovery. Up front Sean O’Hare, Adam Crimmins and Jamie Cahill worked hard creating some excellent scoring chances. The Sky Blues then loosened their grip on proceeding and allowed Carryduff back into the game with a couple of soft goals which left the half-time scores 2.11 to 2.03
With Carryduff having the breeze in the second half the Bridge had to dig deep and Liam Mathers and Thomas Hardy in defence battled well to keep their teamin front. Dylan O’Hare was excellent from dead balls and he kept the scoreboard official very busy. At midfield captain Jamie McKay and Charlie Smyth played well and won their fair share of possession and drove their sideon. Oisin Magone, Dan Griffin Anton White and Micheal McKay did well when introduced.  Carryduff threw everything at the hosts in the last ten minutes and a lot of untidy play and several basic mistakes led to a very nervous finish which should not have been the case.  Final Score:  2-21 to 4-8.

Niamh Fitzgerald plays senior camogie for Mayobridge. Her sister Lauren has an aggressive childhood cancer which returns almost 50% of the time. The Fitzgerald family are on a massive fundraising campaign to give her the best chance of receiving cancer-free-treatment in New York.
We at Mayobridge GAC want to give Lauren hope. Tim Colhoun, senior camogie manager is organising a walk up Slieve Martin on Saturday (4th May)led by Brendan Monaghan and the senior camogie panel. We are inviting the community and beyond to attend and join our walk and in doing so to challenge yourselves and raise much needed funds for Lauren Fitzgerald. To join our walkwe are asking for a donation of £10 which can be given on the day.  If you are unable to join our walk you can donate using the link below.
