MAYOBRIDGE NOTES

At 8.15am on Saturday morning eight young girls from the Mayobridge U8 camogie team along with a number of parents and mentors boarded a bus bound for The Eddie Irvine Sports Club in Bangor, which is one of Northern Ireland’s premier sporting facilities. This was their first outing of the season and they were kitted out with new jerseys which were very kindly donated by Paddy andDympna Tumilty and family.
Ulster Camogie organised the event with Mayobridge playing 4 teams; Bredagh, Ballycran, Derrymacash and Portaferry. They won two of their games and drew in a third. They played exceptionally well in all four games notching up 13 goals in total. The girls changed position in each game and individually saw plenty of action. They finished their games at 11:30am and then it was time to have some fun! The Bubbleball (Zorb) was a big hit along with other activities available at the Club. On the way home the girls enjoyed some well deserved ice cream and brightened the return journey with a sing song the whole way back to Mayobridge.

On Friday evening Mayobridge entertained Kilcoo in a Division One fixture and after a close fought game it was the visitors who took the spoils on a final scoreline of 0-15 to 3-5. With just over ten minutes to go at the Bridge the Sky Blues led by 3-5 to 0-10 but failed to add to their total despite creating some good scoring opportunities and five unanswered points saw Kilcoo over the line. In the first half Kilcoo dominated the opening twenty minutes and had five points on the board before Caolan Gallagher opened the scoring for the Bridge in the 22nd minute. Caolan added two more points to leave the interval score 0-6 to 0-3 for the Magpies.
The second half turned into a rip roaring affair as the Sky Blues stunned the visitors with three smashing goals from Cathal Magee, Darren Fegan and Caolan Gallagher and at this stage it looked like a home win was on the cards but the Magpies came back strongly to claim a narrow victory when a draw might have been a fairer result.
Mayobridge Scorers: Caolan Gallagher (1-4), Darren Fegan (1-0), CathalMagee (1-0), Ronan Sexton (0-1).

This Friday the Bridge will make the short journey over to Hilltown to face the challenge of Clonduff, throw-in 7.30.p.m.

Pictured is the Mayobridge U-14 team and selectors who took part in the Nicole Fegan Cup competition.

Last Sunday Mayobridge GAC hosted the inaugural Nicole Fegan Challenge cup for U14 Camogie. Seven teams competed on the day, Mayobridge, Clonduff, Castlewellan, Crossmaglen, Aghaderg, Portaferry and Kilclief Ben Dearg. The camogie was played at a high standard and although very competitive was played in a very sporting manner throughout. Crossmaglenwere the eventual winners beating a very gallant Castlewellan side in a hard fought close final. The tournament concluded with Nicole’s parents Cathal and Margo Fegan presenting the Crossmaglen captains with the Nicole FeganChallenge Cup. Mayobridge GAC would like to thank all players, mentors and supporters from all clubs who participated in the event and particularly Marie Sherry for organising this tournament. Thank you to the referees Veronica Ward and Niamh Sharkey who officiated at the tournament, also a huge thank you to all volunteers who provided teas, coffees, sandwiches and tray bakes for all present. Also thanks to Brendan Monaghan and Dessie Kennedy for their helpthroughout the tournament. And finally Mayobridge GAC would like to thank Cathal and Margo and all members of the Fegan family who attended thetournament in what was a very special day to honour the memory of Nicole.

Congratulations to U16 Droichead-Pointe Ladies, who defeated pre-match favourites Saval in the U-16 A league on Sunday morning last. From the outset, the Blues assumed control of the game, dominating the first half to lead by eight points at the break. In the second half the Blues were determined to hold their advantage and a fine display of football ensued. Team play was excellent and with co-ordinated passing that would challenge the very best of teams, the ball travelled up the field at a blistering pace. A strong defence, lively and interactive midfield and attacking forward line left the opposition with little scoring options and resulted in a winning score of 8-16 to 1-11.
