Mayobridge Club Notes Sunday 5th May 2019

MAYOBRIDGE NOTES

Droichead Pointe U16 ladies team travelled to Downpatrick on Sunday morning last hoping to secure another victory in the U16 A League. They started off in fine style with a succession of points and then a well worked goal saw them lead at the interval by 1-8 to 0-6.

The second half proved to be a great battle and the Mayobridge/Warrenpoint combination had to be their best to thwart the challenge of a very good Downpatrick side.  At the end only five points separated the sides with the visitors claiming the win on a final scoreline of 4-12 to 3-10.  Well done ladies.

On Friday evening Loughinisland defeated Mayobridge by 2-9 to 0-9 in Division One.  This Friday Kilcoo will be visitors to the Bridge.

On Saturday morning in beautiful weather conditions approximately 80 club members met at Kilbroney Car Park to help raise funds for Lauren Fitzgerald’s cancer treatment.  After a bit of a warm-up the group set off at 8.30am led by Brendan Monaghan and Martin Sherry and senior camogie managers Tim Colhoun and Marie Sherry.  Mickey Linden led the minor football team and they took a slight detour from the walkers and ran the trek. The comradelyalong the way kept everyone going and the route uphill was a struggle at timesbut all made it to the summit of Slieve Martin. From the top views over Carlingford Lough were spectactular and for many this was their first mountain climb and could only be described as exhilarating. This climb raised £1000 from participants and donations are still coming in online.  A huge thank you to Tim Colhoun for organising the event and also to our experienced leaders Brendan Monaghan and Martin Sherry. Well done to all

The young Sky Blues made the short trip to Milltown on Thursday evening for this top of the table clash in the South Down U-16 league. Both teams entered the game unbeaten and it was the hosts who took the early advantage with a goal and some nice long range points. Jamie Cahill kept the Bridge in touchwith three points before their midfield started to get to grips with the game, Thomas Hardy scored a great individual goal and his partner Dan Griffin added a fine point.  Before the break Eoghan Sherry got on the end of a move to palm to the net and Tom Hardy with two points gave the Sky Blues a 2.6 to 2.5 lead.
On the restart the young Point side again were quick out of the blocks with young Howlett and Madden prominent. It was Matthew Morgan who got thefirst score of the half for the Bridge followed closely by Eoghan Woods who scored the point of the evening from an impossible angle off the outside of the boot. Jack Gribben got off the mark with a nice point to keep his team in contention but with five minutes to go it was the hosts who led and looked like they were going to remain unbeaten. But an excellent last few minutes saw Cahill, McManus, Magone, Hardy and Griffin really drive at the heart of the Point defence. James McManus scored 11 and a penalty slotted home by Jack Gribben put the visitors in front at the right time. The final score of the evening came from Paul Martin who won his own ball in full forward, dummied with his left and fired over a point with his right, much to the delight of the large travelling support. Well done to both teams.  Final score:  Mayobridge  4-10  Warrenpoint  3-10

The Mayobridge U-18 team travelled to Kilcoo on Tuesday evening and it was a game that the Magpies dominated throughout. Mayobridge had chances to get into the game but intense tackling from Kilcoo who frequently got three of their players into the tackle made it difficult for the Bridge to take scores.
Constant rotation of the Kilcoo players in every position made it difficult to pin them down and they attacked at fast pace from off the shoulder which was difficult to stop.
Kilcoo at their full panel strength were clearly up for this game and were first to every ball from the start. Credit to the Mayobridge players who got to grips with Kilcoo for most periods of the 2nd half but were guilty of too many poor passes and failing to take several scoring chances.
On the night the home side were the better team but the Sky Blues never stopped playing and this game will hopefully provide them with valuable experience for the league playoffs as one more win should ensure a playoff place.
This determined group of players will bounce back and push on as there is plenty to play for in the rest of the league and championship.  Final score:  Kilcoo  4-13  Mayobridge  0-9
