MAYOBRIDGE NOTES
Niamh Fitzgerald plays senior camogie for Mayobridge. Her sister Lauren has an aggressive childhood cancer which returns almost 50% of the time. The Fitzgerald family are on a massive fundraising campaign to give her the best chance of receiving cancer-free-treatment in New York.
We at Mayobridge GAC want to give Lauren hope. Tim Colhoun, senior camogie manager is organising a walk up Slieve Binnian on 4th May led by Brendan Monaghan and the senior camogie panel. We are inviting the community and beyond to attend and join our walk and in doing so challenge yourselves and raise much needed funds for Lauren Fitzgerald. To join our walk we are asking for a donation of £10 which can be given on the 4th May. Further details will be posted closer to the date and if you are unable to join our walk you can donate using the link below.

Mayobridge senior football team chalked up a second successive league victory with a very impressive display on Friday evening which saw them defeat neighbours Burren by a five point margin, 1-15 to 0-13. Right from the start it was obvious that the Sky Blues were well up for this game and after Shane Smyth opened the scoring in the opening minute with a point the home side went on to be the more dominant side for the rest of the half. Aided by a goal from Cory Quinn in the 22nd minute the Bridge went in at the break leading by 1-7 to 0-7.
When these sides last met which was in the senior championship the Bridge also led by three points at half–time but Burren hit five goals in the second half to win by ten points. However there was no danger of that happening again as the Sky Blues kept a tight rein on proceedings with Burren reliant on the free taking of Donal O’Hare to keep them in touch. In the end the home side were comfortable winners and the victory was very well deserved.

On Saturday afternoon Liatroim and Mayobridge reserves teams played out a draw in Liatroim in the All County Premier Reserve League, the final score was Liatroim 2-7 Mayobridge 1-10.
Mayobridge U-12 team defeated Clan na Banna on Wednesday evening by 10-10 to 3-9 in section two of the league but in a section 4 game, St. Michaels were too strong for the Bridge winning by ten points, the final score line reading 3-8 to 2-1. On Sunday the U-12’s were in action again when they visited Clonduff. In section 2 the Bridge emerged victorious by 2-6 to 1-8 however in section 4 the Yellows won by 3-2 to 1-5.
Mayobridge U-14 camogie team travelled to Liatroim for the first round of the league on Tuesday night. With the wind on their backs the Sky Blue girls were sharper out of the blocks and dominated the early stages. Cara Crimmins and Molly Tumilty set the tone at midfield, both played with grit and determination and fought ferociously for every ball. Mayobridge had the majority of possession with the half forward line of Cliona Gordon, Niamh Sherry and Cara McAnuff right in the middle of the action. Space was at a premium in the first half and a lot of hard work didn’t result in a score. The Bridge were guilty of playing up the congested middle section and the Liatroim defence stood strong and cleared their lines. The Mayobridge half–back line found themselves playing in and around midfield, however, they hardly put a foot wrong with Caragh McConville playing the centre half back position brilliantly and Orla Crimmins reading the ball perfectly, time and time again. Orla placed the ball well and the Bridge forwards found the space they needed. Niamh Sherry got the first score of the game with a superb strike that deceived the keeper and found the net. Jessica Gribben was working tirelessly in full forward and was rewarded with a fantastic goal a few minutes later as she finished from close range. The Sky Blue full back line was coming under increasing pressure as Liatriom hit a purple patch but they were to be denied as Emma Carroll and Niamh Carr were in fine form in the corners and Maeve McCartan was in control in full back. Liatroim weren’t going to be denied and a mix up out the field resulted in the home side finding the player in space who finished to the net. This sparked Mayobridge on and after a super puck from Ellen Griffin in goal, the Sky Blues were on the attack. Cara Crimmins set off on a fantastic solo run and found Cara McAnuff who struck a marvellous goal. Holly Hardy and Niamh Martin both were unlucky not to get on the score sheet as the sliotar spent the remainder of the half in the Liatroim half of the pitch.
Half time score: Liatroim 1.0 Mayobridge 3.0
The second half followed in a similar pattern to the first and Mayobridge kept the pressure on. Grace Hand was involved in a lot of play and her tackling combined with her pace ensured the ‘Bridge girls were on top. Amy Murney replaced the injured Maeve McCartan and made her impact count as she made a great catch and cleared the ball well. Orla Canavan also made a good impact as she found herself winning a lot of ball in the forward line. Unfortunately the Bridge didn’t add to their score but were worthy winners.
Final score: Liatroim 1.0 Mayobridge 3.0
This was an exciting game and a super start to the league for the young camogs. Congratulations to Cliona Gordon and Orla Crimmins who have been selected as captain and vice-captain respectively.

Mayobridge under 14 footballers played their second game of the season on Monday night and came back from Ballyholland with a great win, the final scoreline reading 10-9 to 4-7. After the previous week’s heavy defeat to Burren, the boys were in determined mood to give a good performance. Ballyholland started the stronger and went 2 points up early on, but the Bridge soon settled into the game and produced some great football to lead 4-6 to 0-4 at half time.
A slow start in the second half allowed Ballyholland to come right back into it with 3 quick goals, but once again the Sky Blues settled things down and got into their rhythm with a flurry of goals. All the boys got a run out and every player upped their performance from last week.

The U-14 team continued their good form with a good victory over Annaclone on Sunday winning by 7-16 to 3-8 in the South Down League. Well done boys.
The U–16 Droichead Pointe team (Mayobridge, Warrenpoint combination)(pictured above)who fielded on Wednesday evening last put up a fine performance against Kilcoo. The young Blues immediately took control of the game and great teamwork resulted in them taking an early lead which they maintained throughout the game to run out winners. Despite the relentless rain and cold conditions both teams played to the final whistle and were a credit to their clubs.
On Sunday the U-16 ladies were in action again at a bitterly cold and windy Milltown to meet the powerhouse of Bredagh in the 4th round of the U16 A League. This highly anticipated game did not disappoint and spectators from both camps were treated to a fantastic display of football from both sides. The Bredagh girls were quick off the mark, with the Sky Blues taking a little longer to settle into the game but once they found their form there literally was no stopping them. True to form, Bredagh fired everything at their disposal at the Droichead Pointe girls who responded by rising to the occasion with outstanding performances across the entire team. Despite Bredagh’s best efforts and continued onslaught right to the final whistle, the victory went to a well-deserving Droichead Pointe: 3-13 to 1-09.
Next up for the U16 Ladies is an away league fixture to RGU, Downpatrick on Sunday 28th April – best of luck girls!
The U-16 footballers had a great start to the league with a good win in Jack Mackin Park against a strong Newry Bosco side on Thursday evening. Playing into a strong breeze in the first half, the boys played some nice football and led 3–5 to 0–5 at the break. The young Sky Blues continued their attacking style in the second period and ran out winners on final score line of 8–10 to 2–9. Special mention to Eoin Sherry who banged in four goals and was a handful all evening.
