MAYOBRIDGE NOTES

Mayobridge senior team opened their Division One campaign with a well merited victory at Ballyholland on Thursday evening, the final scoreline reading 2-8 to 0-8. The game was played in very wet and windy conditions which led to a lot of basic errors by both sides. The Bridge played against the very strong wind in the first half but despite this they went in at the break leading by 1-3 to 0-4 with Shane O’Hare being the goal scorer. The Sky Blues had also conjured up three other goal scoring opportunities which maybe on another day and in better conditions would have been converted.
The wind seemed to abate during the interval but the visitors continued to dominate and Caolan Gallagher hit three good points in the opening eight minutes. Other scoring chances were squandered before Shane Smyth hit the corner of the net in the 47th minute and there was no way back for the Harps after this. In the closing minutes with the points in the bag, the Bridge seemed to slack off a little and the home side took advantage to score three late points to add a bit more respectability to the final scoreline. A good start for the new management and Burren are next on the menu this Friday.

In the Premier Reserve League Mayobridge had a big win over visitors An Riocht by 7-9 to 0-10 on Saturday evening.

Mayobridge minor team had a good win on Sunday afternoon against Clonduff, 3-14 to 3-6. The Bridge dominated possession in the early stages especially around the middle where Charlie Smyth was in excellent form.
Playing with the breeze the Bridge were able to supply good ball into the full forward line led by the All-Ireland schools cup winner Adam Crimmins and the good possession led to a procession of scores. After Charlie Smyth was harshly issued a black card Patrick Donnan stepped up to do a great job at midfield and special mention also to Dan Griffin who made a good impact with two well taken goals.
Defensively the Sky Blues kept the Clonduff forwards at bay with Shane Keenan, Thomas Hardy and Matthew Morgan playing well. Liam McManus at centre half back had an influential game and dominated this area.
At half-time the Bridge led by 2-11 to 0-1 but with the breeze in favour of Clonduff in the second half the home side had to be prepared for a tough battle. However the Bridge continued where they left off and increased their lead through good work from Caolan McPolin, Jamie Cahill captain Jamie McKay and the outstanding Liam Mc Manus who was at the centre of all the good play. Sean Magone made a welcome return to competitive football after a cruciate injury and did well and James Mc Manus and Eoghan Sherry also made valuable contributions when introduced.
Clonduff were reduced to 14 men but despite having an extra man the Bridge actually struggled during the last 15 mins and allowed the Yellas in for some handy scores. Overall quite a good performance but there are still some aspects of play which could be improved upon.
