MAYOBRIDGE NOTES
Mayobridge reached the quarter-final stages of the Down Senior Championship on Saturday afternoon when they defeated Loughinisland by a single point in Castlewellan 2-16 to1-18 after extra time. This was a close contest throughout between two well matched teams. At half-time Loughinisland led 1-6 to 1-4 with the Bridge goal scorer being Cory Quinn which was one of the best scores of the game. A short kick-out went astray and Cory despite getting “special treatment” from some defenders broke clear with an excellent chip into his hands and he lashed the ball to the net.
The second half was shaded by Loughinisland and they looked to have done enough when they led by three points with time almost up. In the last play of the half however the ball was launched into the ‘Island defence and after a goalmouth scramble young Jamie McKay hit the equalising goal which meant extra time. In the first period of that extra time the East Down men hit three quick points and again the Sky Blues were facing defeat in the face. Once again they raised their game and some outrageous points from Caolan Gallagher and Kevin O’Rourke levelled matters. Loughinisland went in front in the second period but another outstanding Kevin O’Rourke point drew the Bridge level. Caolan Gallagher then became the Mayobridge hero winning the game with another fantastic point. Well done to the team and management.

Congratulations to our Scór competitor Eimear Magee who was chosen by the Ladies board to sing Amhrán na Bhfiann on Sunday before the All Ireland Senior Championship LGFA Semi Final between Dublin v Cork in Croke Park. It was a very proud day for her family, club and county. Well done Eimear.
Well done to the Mayobridge U-10 football team (pictured above) who competed in the Clann na Banna Tommy Bradley Memorial Tournament in Banbridge on Saturday. The boys played some terrific football and were worthy winners of the Shield competition. Well done boys
On Tuesday evening Mayobridge minor team suffered a five point defeat in the second round of the championship at the hands of Bryansford in Newcastle, the final scoreline reading 4-8 to 0-15. The home side settled quickly and had four points on the board before the Bridge got off the mark. A penalty miss and a goal for the Ford left the Sky Blues trailing at half-time by 1-5 to 0-5.
In the second half the visitors hit some excellent points but all their good work was undone by the concession of three goals. Despite this defeat Mayobridge still qualify top off their group to avail of home advantage in a quarter final. However if the Bridge are to progress they will need a vast improvement on this performance if they hope to maintain their championship ambitions.

The Mayobridge U-10 Ladies travelled the short distance to Newry Bosco for a challenge match on Thursday evening. Facing a very strong competent side the Bridge girls took a while to settle but as the match continued so did their confidence, they competed for every ball and every girl gave 100% showing a willingness to learn. Congratulations to Bosco on their win and a very sporting game. Both teams are pictured above. Missing from photo Lucy McMahon who went off injured after a very brave save in the goalmouth.
Mayobridge GAC deeply regrets the passing of our former camogie player, Josephine Burns (nee O’Hare) and would like to extend sincere and heartfelt sympathy to her husband Sean, sons Cathal and Shane, sisters Briege, Bernarde, brother Brian and to the extended Burns and O’Hare family circles.
